New Year’s Resolutions for Entrepreneurs

“This year I’m going to do things differently.”

“I’m going to be more proactive this year!”

These are so often the phrases that greet us every New Year. But there is one key similarity between all these changes that we promise ourselves we’ll make – we make the same promises every year.

So how will we do things differently this year knowing that when December 2015 comes around, we will have fulfilled our promise to ourselves? At Virtalent, we’ve provided a few resolutions that can help you be more proactive for this coming year.

Organisation is key

As obvious as it may sound, organisation is a key New Year’s resolution for Entrepreneurs. Write down everything you need to do and everything you want to achieve this year, and then prioritise them and set yourself deadlines. Simply getting into the mindset of knowing your workload will help you get through it much more easily. Setting yourself goals can help you plan for the future and gives you something to work towards. Having both short-term and long-term goals will ensure that you achieve your short-term goals first, which will set you on the road to achieving your long-term objectives. Organising your thoughts for the year will set you off to a great start.

Streamlining can often be one of the New Year’s resolutions for Entrepreneurs that isn’t always thought of. Think of all the time you wasted last year, what dragged you down and what will hinder you from getting the job done in the future. By being aware of the problem in the first place is a step in the right  direction. Understandably, there has to be a bit of form filling and tick-boxing from time to time that we simply can’t avoid. However, holding onto processes that don’t work will cause you the same problems over and over again. A New Year’s resolution for Entrepreneurs should be tackling the problems as well as finding solutions and new ways of doing things.  Firstly, find the problem and then analyse how to tackle it. Once you have analysed the issue, re-design and implement the process, ensuring that the process has been streamlined and improved. Finally, review everything that you’ve changed to see if it has been changed for the better. Implementing change is a great New Year’s resolutions for Entrepreneurs, so don’t be afraid to adapt to change this year!

Positive thinking

At the start of every New Year, you can be easily daunted by the prospect of your to-do list for the coming year. Instead of worrying about the long list ahead of you, change the way you approach it and make more of a conscious effort to think positively. Any negative thought that enters your head try to eliminate immediately. Your to-do list won’t be completed on the first day, so don’t have the mentality that you have to do it all at once! Negativity fuels the way you act and how you approach your work, so try to approach this year with an open mind. As Entrepreneurs, we can easily fall into the trap of negative thinking and it can be easy to act on that negative thought. Get into the habit that when every negative thought enters your mind, you counter it with a positive thought. Habit then soon becomes routine.

Take care of yourself

Entrepreneurs lead extremely busy lifestyles, which is why health and wellbeing can be forgotten when it comes to making resolutions. Therefore, one of the most important New Year’s resolutions for Entrepreneurs should be to take more care of themselves. Eat good nutritious food that fuels your mind and body. Being on top of your game is key and can be achieved easily by eating well and drinking lots. If you want to stay on top of your business, you need to stay on top of your health too.
